How To Use Motion Detectors For Home Security
Author: Jim Johnson
Knowing what is happening around your home at all times is very helpful for home security. And anything that you can do to make your home more secure will help decrease the chance that your home will be chosen as a target by a professional burglar.
Today there a lot of options when it comes to home security equipment that puts the advatage in the hands of the homeowner and one of those is the motion detector. Actuall motion detectors have been found in houses for several years in other uses, like helping make sure that the garage door doesn't close while someone is underneath it. But they are now being used more and more often as an integral part of a home security system to help keep homeowners aware of what is going on outside their home at all times, but especially at night.
For instance a very simple use of motion detectors in home security is to put up flood lights around the houes at strategic points that employ motion detectors to turn them on whenever someone steps into the path of the beam. These type of lights/motion detector combinations can be found very inexpensively at most hardware stores. You can either hard wire them to be turned on manually or use battery powered models that are activated only in the dark. If you use the battery powered units be sure to replace the batteries often though to keep them in working order.
Another popular use for motion sensors is inside the home as a trigger for the installed alarm system. They can be mounted in an unobtrusive part of a room where it can monitor room traffic while you are away. If anyone gets past the door and window sensors they will still set off the motion detectors as soon as they start moving around inside.
Motion detectors can also be used outside the home to turn on video surveillance cameras for more advanced home security systems. If mounted along with a security camera system they can sense when someone enters their area and turn on the camera to either display the activity so you can monitor it, or record it to tape or even to a computer hard drive. The advantage of using motion sensitive devices in these cases is that the camera does not always have to be on. It is only activated when motion triggers it.
Motion detectors are inexpensive workhorses that are also hard to fool, and for all of these reasons they can be a very valuable part of a very effective home security system. ...
